Evanston, Ill., (08 October 2015) – Kristen Bell is the newest face to join Rotary's 'This Close' public awareness campaign for polio eradication. A paralyzing and life altering disease, polio is on the verge of becoming the second human disease ever to be eliminated worldwide after smallpox.

Bell joins Rotary's fight against polio as the service organization and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative enter the final push to eliminate the vaccine-preventable disease. With the historic removal of Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries last month, just two continue to report polio cases: Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"I am overjoyed to work with Rotary at such an important moment in history," Bell said. "To help create awareness about this horrible disease is exhilarating."

Bell is best known for her roles as the quick-witted, sassy title character in the hit series Veronica Mars, razor-sharp Jeannie van der Hooven of House of Lies, and the voice of Princess Anna of Arendelle in Disney's third highest-grossing film Frozen. She became interested in the importance of vaccines after the birth of her two daughters, Lincoln (age two) and Delta (age one).

"As the mother of two young girls, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to make sure every child is safe," she said. "Polio can be prevented with just 60 cents worth of vaccine - there's absolutely no reason any child should suffer from it. Hopefully by lending my voice to send this message, I can help rid the world of polio forever."

As part of the 'This Close' campaign, Bell will be featured in ads raising her thumb and forefinger in the 'this close' gesture with the tagline 'we're this close to ending polio.' Since the initiative launched in 1988, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 400 confirmed in 2014.

The actress joins other public figures and celebrities participating in Rotary's public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Supermodel Isabeli Fontana; Latin Grammy Award-winning singer, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; action movie star Jackie Chan; boxing great Manny Pacquiao; pop star Psy; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; conservationist Jane Goodall; premier violinist Itzhak Perlman; Grammy Award winners A.R. Rahman; Angelique Kidjo and Ziggy Marley; and peace advocate Queen Noor of Jordan.

Rotary launched its polio immunization program PolioPlus in 1985 and in 1988 became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and more recently the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Rotary's roles within the initiative are fundraising, advocacy, raising awareness and mobilizing volunteers. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.4 billion and countless volunteer hours to fight polio. Through 2018, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year. Evanston, Ill. (11 Sept. 2015) — Evanston-based Rotary International will help support the Evanston Day of Caring with a full week dedicated to doing good in the community. This advance initiative – beginning Monday, Sept. 14 – has been dubbed, Rotary Week of Caring in recognition of the city-wide event on 19 September.

More than 100 Rotary employees will contribute over 200 collective hours of community service, performing a myriad of activities from packaging medical supplies to be sent to developing countries, to beautifying local playgrounds in Evanston and the Chicagoland area. (서울) 2015년 8월12일 – 전세계 120만 회원을 보유한 봉사단체인 국제로타리(Rotary International)의 제 107회 로타리 국제대회가 "로타리의 감동, 세계를 한국으로 (Connect with Korea – Touch the World)"라는 주제로2016년 5월28일부터 6월1일 서울에서 개최된다. 이 대회에는 전세계 150여개국에서 5만명 이상이 참가할 것으로 예상되며 대회장은 KINTEX로 선정됐다.

매년 각 국가를 순회하며 개최되는 로타리 국제대회는 지구촌 곳곳에서 로타리 회원들이 참가해 한 해동안 실시해온 봉사 활동의 성과를 축하하고, 친교와 우정을 나누는 대규모 국제행사로서 대회 성격과 다국적 참여라는 점에서 '미니 UN (mini-United Unions)'으로 불리기도 한다. 대회장인 KINTEX에서는 세계적 인사들의 강연과 폭넓은 주제를 다루는 본회의, 워크숍, 그리고 각종 행사 등이 개최된다.

특히 '3Km 평화의 행진'은 5월28일(토) 오전 시청 앞 광장에서부터 광화문에 이르는 3Km 구간을 행진하면서 인류 평화를 기원하는 행사이다. 참가자들은 각 나라의 고유 의상을 입고 행진에 참여하며, 강강술래 퍼포먼스와 로타리 111년 역사를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 사진 전시회도 펼쳐진다. 이외에도, 세계 청소년 지도자 회의, 다문화 가정 도서관, 코리아 심포니 나이트 (Korea Symphony Night), 발레 공연등과 같은 다양한 행사가 개최된다.

K.R. 라빈드란 국제로타리 회장 (2015-16년)은 "유서깊은 역사와 첨단 기술이 병존하는 서울은 로타리 국제대회를 치루기 안성맞춤이며, 돌아볼 곳이 많은 훌륭한 관광지"라고 밝히면서 "로타리 회원들은 지역사회 봉사 활동을 통해 '세상의 선물'이 되는 기쁨을 국제대회에서 함께 누릴 것"이라고 말했다.

서울 로타리 국제대회는 국제로타리와 한국 로타리 리더들로 구성된 대회 조직 위원회가 협력해 주최하며 한국 정부 및 지방 행정부의 지원을 받는다. 서울 국제대회를 계기로 전세계 로타리 회원들에게 한국의 발전한 모습을 보여주는 동시에 이들의 체류와 관광여행을 통해 상당한 관광수입을 올릴 수 있을 것으로 기대되고 있다.

한국에서는 1927년에 서울에서 첫 로타리클럽이 창립됐다. 현재 한국의 로타리클럽수는 1,616개, 회원수는 6만2,351명으로 회원수가 전세계에서 4번째로 많다. 한국의 로타리클럽들은 지역 및 국제 봉사 사업을 주도하며 극빈층을 위한 의료봉사, 이민자 및 다문화 가정 지원, 겨울철 독거노인 돕기등의 사업을 펼쳐왔다. 특히, 한국의 로타리클럽들은 황사를 막기 위해 고비사막에 방풍림을 조성하는 장기 프로젝트를 추진, 현재까지 미화 133만달러 이상을 투입하여 270헥타아르 면적에 33만5,870 그루의 나무를 심었다. 이 사업은 월스트릿 저널에도 소개된 바 있다.

한국의 로타리 회원들은 국제로타리의 최우선 인도주의 목표인 소아마비 퇴치 노력에 적극 참여중이다. 1985년부터 지금까지 전 세계 로타리 회원들은 소아마비 퇴치를 위해14억 달러 이상을 기부했으며 수많은 자원봉사자들이 막대한 시간을 투입했다. 한국 로타리 회원들은 현재까지 1,460만달러를 소마마비 퇴치 활동에 기부했고 지난 수년 동안 자원봉사단을 구성해 인도를 방문, 소아마비 면역 활동에 직접 참여했다.

Volunteer leaders from around the globe to convene 28 May-1 June 2016

SEOUL (12 August 2015) – Seoul will host Rotary International's 107th annual convention 28 May-1 June 2016 at KINTEX, which is expected to attract more than 50,000 Rotary club members from over 150 countries.

Often described as a "mini-United Nations" because of its global scope and cultural diversity, the Rotary International convention is expected to inject an estimated KRW 184.6 billion (US$ 160 million) into the local economy. The area around KINTEX will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of energy, color and excitement as Rotary members participate in a broad agenda of plenary sessions, workshops and other activities.

"As a city with a long, rich history and the latest amenities, Seoul is the ideal location for a Rotary convention and a delightful travel destination to explore," said 2015-16 Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran. "At the Seoul convention, Rotary members will celebrate the joy of bringing the work of Rotary into our communities to be a gift to the world."

Organized by Rotary International in conjunction with the Seoul Host Organizing Committee of local Rotary leaders, with significant support from the Central Government as well as local governments, the convention also will provide registrants with ample opportunities to savor Seoul's myriad attractions, including an expansive number of parks, museums, shopping centers, restaurants, and the now-famous Gangnam district, made popular by K-pop recording artist Psy.

Seoul is home to the first Rotary club established in Korea, chartered in 1927. Today, Korea is the fourth largest Rotary club country with 1,616 clubs boasting 62,351 members who support an array of local and international service projects, including:

• Rotary clubs in Seoul partnered with Seoul National University Children's Hospital to implement a healthcare program to identify infants and toddlers with a critical illness or chronic conditions in low-income families in the Gangbuk area. Early intervention programs for preterm infants and their parents are also offered.
• Rotary clubs around the country provide various programs to help immigrants and low-income families. During the Seoul convention, the Seoul Host Organization Committee will open a children's library near KINTEX where convention participants can donate illustrated children books in multiple languages.
• Rotary clubs in Seoul donate kimchi annually each winter to elderly people living alone, local community service centers for underprivileged and physically challenged people. The clubs also donate rice.
• Korean Rotary clubs, in cooperation with environmental experts and the government of Mongolia, launched an ambitious US$ 1.3 million long-term project and have planted 335,870 trees on 270 hectares to help reduce the Yellow Wind dust storms that blow off the Gobi desert into Korea, Japan, throughout the region and even as far as the west coast in United States.

Rotary clubs in Korea also continue to support the organization's top philanthropic goal of eradicating polio. Since 1985, Rotary has contributed more than US$1.4 billion (KRW 1.4 trillion) and countless volunteer hours, with Korean Rotary clubs donating more than US$14.6 million (KRW 146 million) to polio eradication. In addition to contributing funds, Korean Rotary members have traveled at their own expense to immunize children against polio in India.

미국 일리노이 주, 에반스턴 (2015년 7월 24일) — 오늘은 아프리카에 유일하게 남은 소아마비 발병국인 나이지리아에서 마지막으로 소아마비가 발병한 지 1년이 되는 날이다. 이 같은 성과는 아프리카 대륙에서의 소아마비 퇴치를 눈앞에 둔 시점에서 중요한 이정표로 평가되고 있다. 로타리는 지난 1985년, 전세계의 아동들을 소아마비로부터 보호하기 위한 폴리오플러스 프로그램을 시작한 이래 소아마비 퇴치 노력에 지속적인 노력을 기울여 왔다. 로타리가 지금까지 소아마비 퇴치를 위해 기부한 액수는 14억 달러를 상회한다.

나이지리아에서는 지난 2014년 7월 24일, 카노 지역에서 발병한 경우가 마지막이었으며, 아프리카 전역에서는 같은 해 8월 11일 발병을 마지막으로 소아마비 발병이 보고되지 않았다. 세계보건기구(WHO)는 조만간 소아마비 발병국 리스트에서 나이지리아를 삭제할 것으로 기대하고 있다. 나이지리아를 비롯한 아프리카 전역에서 3년 동안 소아마비가 발병하지 않으면 WHO는 아프리카 대륙을 소아마비 퇴치 지역으로 인증한다. 이보다 앞서 WHO는 2014년 인도와 남동 아시아를 소아마비 퇴치 지역으로 인증한 바 있다.

로타리는 지난 달 나이지리아에 대한 보조금 1,000만 달러를 포함하여 아프리카에서의 소아마비 퇴치 활동을 위해 1,900만 달러의 보조금을 지원한다고 발표했다. 지난 30년 동안 로타리가 아프리카에서의 소아마비 퇴치 활동을 위해 지원한 액수는 나이지리아에 대한 2억740만 달러를 포함, 총 6억8850만 달러에 달한다.

EVANSTON, Illinois (24 de julio 2015) — Hoy se celebra el primer año desde que se presentó el último caso de polio en Nigeria, el único país africano donde la polio es todavía endémica. Este logro – el período más largo durante el cual no se ha presentado un solo caso de la enfermedad paralizante en Nigeria – indicación quizás de que el mundo está a punto de ser testigo de un gran acontecimiento de salud mundial: el continente africano libre de polio.

Rotary ha estado a la vanguardia de la erradicación de la polio desde 1985, cuando se lanzó la primera iniciativa mundial para vacunar a los niños de todo el mundo contra la polio: el programa insignia PolioPlus. La organización ha aportado más de $1.400 millones para poner fin a la polio.

EVANSTON, Ill. (24. Juli 2015) — Am heutigen Tag ist es genau ein Jahr her, dass in Nigeria der letzte Fall von Kinderlähmung (Polio) auftrat. Nigeria ist das letzte Land auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent, in dem die Krankheit weiterhin endemisch vorkommt. Die bisherige einjährige Unterbrechung ist der längste Zeitraum, in dem das Land keine neue Ansteckung verzeichnen musste. Die Zeichen stehen gut, dass ganz Afrika bald frei von der Kinderlähmung sein wird – ein bedeutender Meilenstein für die Weltgesundheit.

Rotary engagiert sich seit 1985 mit dem PolioPlus Programm führend im weltweiten Kampf gegen die Kinderlähmung. Seither spendete die Organisation über 1,4 Milliarden USD für die Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung.

Der letzte Fall von Kinderlähmung in Nigeria trat am 24. Juli 2014 im Süden des Bundesstaats Kano auf. In Gesamtafrika wurde der letzte Krankheitsfall am 11. August 2014 verzeichnet. In Kürze könnte Nigeria von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) von der Liste polioendemischer Länder gestrichen werden. Sollte zudem in Nigeria und allen anderen Länder Afrikas über drei Jahre hinweg kein weiterer Fall von Kinderlähmung mehr auftreten, kann die gesamte Region von der WHO als poliofrei zertifiziert werden. Zuletzt erklärte die WHO Indien und damit die gesamte Region Südostasien 2014 für poliofrei.

Trotz der guten Nachrichten aus Afrika warnen Experten jedoch, jetzt in den Bemühungen im Kampf gegen die Kinderlähmung nachzulassen. Die nächsten zwei Jahre werden darüber entscheiden, ob Nigeria den derzeitigen Status aufrechterhalten und eine Wiederausbreitung der Krankheit verhindern kann. Hierfür ist eine intensive Polio-Kampagne, die durch Spender, Geberländer und andere Partner unterstützt wird, wichtiger als je zuvor.

Im vergangenen Monat gab Rotary bekannt, Afrika durch 19 Millionen USD an Zuwendungen für Aktivitäten zur Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung zu unterstützen. 10 Millionen USD sollen dabei nach Nigeria fließen. In den letzten dreißig Jahren vergab die Organisation 688,5 Millionen USD für Impfmaßnahmen in Afrika, 207,4 Millionen USD gingen an Nigeria.

„Die weltweit 1,2 Millionen Mitglieder von Rotary – darunter 6.890 in Nigeria – haben bei diesen Leistungen eine wichtige Rolle gespielt. Rotary hat gemeinsam mit seinen Partnern einzigartige und innovative Lösungen auf den Weg gebracht und Probleme ausgeräumt, die noch vor Jahren die Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung in Nigeria erschwerten", so Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotarys National PolioPlus Committee Chair für Nigeria. „Es ist jedoch zu früh, um zu feiern. Die Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung muss in der Welt auch weiterhin höchste Priorität bleiben, um zu gewährleisten, dass die Krankheit nicht wieder nach Nigeria zurückkehrt".

Außer in Nigeria kommt die Kinderlähmung nur noch in Pakistan und Afghanistan endemisch vor. Laut Experten stellt Pakistan bei den weltweiten Ausrottungsbemühungen die größte Herausforderung dar. Das Land wies 2014 beinahe 90% aller weltweiten Krankheitsfälle auf. Doch auch hier gab es in jüngster Zeit Fortschritte. In der ersten Hälfte 2015 ging die Anzahl der Krankheitsfälle im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um beinahe 70% zurück.

Rotary startete 1985 sein Polio-Impfprogramm PolioPlus und wurde 1988 einer der führenden Partner in der Global Polio Eradication Initiative, neben der WHO, UNICEF und den U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seit Beginn der Initiative im Jahr 1988 ging die Anzahl der Fälle an Kinderlähmung um 99,9%, von 350.000 Fällen pro Jahr auf weniger als 400 in 2014, zurück.

Rotarys Aufgaben im Rahmen der Initiative schließen Spendenarbeit, Fürsprache bei Entscheidungsträgern und soziale Mobilisierung ein. Bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt investierte Rotary über 1,4 Milliarden USD und zahllose Einsatzstunden von ehrenamtlichen Helfern in den Kampf gegen die Kinderlähmung. Bis 2018 wird jeder Spenden-Dollar (bis zu 35 Millionen USD pro Jahr), den Rotary in die Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung investiert, um den doppelten Betrag von der Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ergänzt.

Esta conquista — o período mais longo sem nenhum caso da doença no país — pode significar que a África se tornará livre da poliomielite em breve, um marco significativo para a saúde global.

O Rotary lidera a luta contra a paralisia infantil desde 1985, quando lançou sua primeira iniciativa global para imunizar as crianças contra a doença: seu principal programa, chamado Pólio Plus. A organização já doou mais de US$ 1,4 bilhão para a causa.

O último caso de pólio na Nigéria ocorreu em 24 de julho de 2014, no sul do estado de Kano, e o continente africano não registra ocorrências da doença desde 11 de agosto de 2014. A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) poderá retirar a Nigéria da lista de países endêmicos em breve. Depois que a Nigéria e todos os países da África ficarem três anos sem nenhum caso de pólio, a OMS certificará a região como livre da doença. No mês passado, o Rotary anunciou US$ 19 milhões em subsídios para atividades contínuas na África, incluindo quase US$ 10 milhões para a Nigéria. Nos últimos trinta anos, a organização doou US$ 688,5 milhões para a erradicação em toda a África e US$ 207,4 milhões para a Nigéria.

"Os associados do Rotary de todo o mundo — incluindo os 6.890 da Nigéria — desempenharam um importante papel para esse avanço. ナイジェリア以外での課題

世界がポリオフリーと宣言されるまでには、ナイジェリア以外にも課題となる国々があります。野性型ポリオウイルスが、アフガニスタンとパキスタンの2カ国にも常在しているからです。特に2014年に世界のポリオ発症の90％を占めたパキスタンの状況が懸念されます。しかし2015年前半の発症件数は前年の同時期から70％減っています。

ロータリーとポリオ

ロータリーは1985年にポリオ撲滅プログラム「ポリオプラス」を開始して以来、1988年には世界保健機関（WHO）、ユニセフ、CDC（米国疾病対策センター）とともに、世界ポリオ撲滅推進活動（GPEI）の主要パートナーとなりました。ポリオプラスの開始当時、毎年約35万件を数えていた世界のポリオ発症数は、2014年には400件以下と、99.9％減少しました。

GPEIにおいてロータリーは主に、募金活動、政府機関などへの資金支援の働きかけ、撲滅活動への社会動員に貢献してきました。これまでポリオ撲滅のために14億米ドルの資金と、無数のボランティアを投入しています。ロータリーが2018年までにポリオ撲滅活動に充てる寄付は、（毎年3,500万米ドルまでを対象に）ビル＆メリンダ・ゲイツ財団から倍額のマッチング（上乗せ）を受けるため、3倍の資金となってポリオとの闘いに投入されます。

EVANSTON, États-Unis (24 Juillet 2015) — Nous célébrons aujourd'hui une année sans aucun cas de poliomyélite au Nigeria, le seul pays encore endémique sur le continent africain. Cet exploit, qui constitue la plus longue période sans nouveau cas de polio au Nigeria, pourrait bien signaler le début de l'éradication de cette maladie invalidante et parfois mortelle en Afrique.

Le dernier cas de polio au Nigeria a en effet été enregistré le 24 juillet 2014, dans l'État de Kano au nord du pays, et le continent africain n'a pas connu de nouveau cas depuis le 11 août 2014. En conséquence, il est possible que l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (O.M.S.) retire prochainement le Nigeria de la liste des pays endémiques. Si trois années s'écoulent sans aucun cas de poliomyélite en Afrique, l'O.M.S. certifiera la région exempte de cette maladie, un statut que l'Inde et la région Asie du Sud-Est se sont vus attribués en 2014.

Les experts de santé font remarquer que bien qu'il s'agisse d'une victoire significative sur la poliomyélite, le monde ne doit pas baisser la garde. Au cours des deux prochaines années, le Nigeria devra poursuivre ses efforts et prévenir une résurgence de la maladie. Le soutien des donateurs, des partenaires et des gouvernements est crucial afin de continuer à planifier et mettre en œuvre des campagnes de vaccination efficaces.

Le Rotary, au travers de son programme phare PolioPlus, est la figure de proue de l'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la polio depuis 1985, année durant laquelle il a réalisé sa première campagne de vaccination aux Philippines. Depuis, l'organisation a versé plus de 1,4 milliard de dollars aux efforts d'éradication de la polio.

Le mois dernier, le Rotary a annoncé qu'il versait une nouvelle subvention de 19 millions de dollars afin de poursuivre les activités d'éradication de la poliomyélite en Afrique, dont près de 10 millions alloués au Nigeria. Au cours des trente dernières années, l'organisation a versé au total 668,5 millions de dollars à l'éradication de la poliomyélite en Afrique dont 207,4 millions pour financer des activités au Nigeria.

« Nos 1,2 million de membres dans le monde, parmi lesquels 6 890 au Nigeria, ont joué un rôle crucial pour arriver à cet exploit. Avec le Nigeria, seuls deux pays sont encore endémiques : le Pakistan et l'Afghanistan. Selon les experts, l'éradication de la polio sera plus difficile au Pakistan, qui compte aujourd'hui près de 90 % des cas signalés dans le monde en 2014. Cependant, des progrès ont été constatés dernièrement dans ce pays, avec une réduction de près de 70 % des cas lors de la première moitié 2015 par rapport à la même période en 2014.
