EVANSTON, Ill. (24 July 2015) — Today marks one year since the last case of polio in Nigeria, the only remaining polio-endemic country in Africa. This achievement – the longest period Nigeria has gone without a case of the paralyzing disease – could signal the world will soon see a polio-free Africa, a significant global health milestone.

Rotary has been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio since 1985, when it launched the first global initiative to immunize the world's children against polio: its flagship PolioPlus program. The organization has donated more than $1.4 billion to end polio.

Nigeria's last polio case occurred on July 24, 2014, in southern Kano state, and the continent of Africa has not seen a polio case since August 11, 2014. The World Health Organization (WHO) may soon remove Nigeria from the list of polio endemic countries. When Nigeria and every country in Africa go three years without a case of polio, WHO will certify the region as polio-free. Most recently, WHO declared India and its Southeast Asia region polio-free in 2014.

Experts caution that while today marks a noteworthy milestone, the world cannot take its sights off polio. The next two years will be critical to ensuring Nigeria remains on-track and prevent a resurgence of the disease. The support of donors, governments and partners is needed more than ever to ensure high-quality polio campaigns.

Last month, Rotary announced US$19 million in grants for continued polio eradication activities in Africa, including nearly $10 million for Nigeria. Over the past thirty years, the organization has given $688.5 million for polio eradication throughout Africa, and $207.4 million for Nigeria.

"Rotary's 1.2 million members around the world – including the 6,890 in Nigeria – have played an important role in this progress. Rotary has worked with partners to successfully pioneer unique and innovative solutions to the challenges facing polio eradication in Nigeria," said Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotary's National PolioPlus Committee chair for Nigeria. "However, it is too soon to celebrate. The world needs to keep polio eradication a high priority to ensure the disease does not return within our borders."

Beyond Nigeria, only Pakistan and Afghanistan remain polio-endemic. According to experts, Pakistan will prove the biggest challenge to global eradication efforts, with the country accounting for nearly 90% of the world's cases in 2014. However, there has been recent progress in Pakistan, with the country reporting a nearly 70% reduction in cases in the first half of 2015 compared to the same time in 2014.

Rotary launched its polio immunization program PolioPlus in 1985 and in 1988 became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the WHO, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since the initiative launched in 1988, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 400 confirmed in 2014.

Rotary's roles within the initiative are fundraising, advocacy, and social mobilization. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.4 billion and countless volunteer hours to fight polio. Through 2018, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year.

미국 일리노이 에반스턴 (2015년 7월1일 ) — 스리랑카 콜롬보 출신의 기업인 K.R. "라비" 라빈드란이 지난 7월 1일 국제로타리의 105번째 회장으로 취임했다. 국제로타리는 전 세계에서 인도주의적 봉사를 실천하고 있는 120만 명의 자원봉사자들로 이루어진 글로벌 네트워크이다.

콜롬보 로타리클럽 소속인 라빈드란 회장은 자신의 최고 우선 순위에 대해 자원봉사를 통해 지역사회 개선에 열정을 쏟는 남녀 회원을 영입하여 클럽을 강화하는 것이라 말했다.

로타리클럽들은 지역사회 푸드 뱅크에서부터 오지 마을을 위한 식수 공급에 이르기까지 국내외를 막론하고 서로 힘을 합쳐 효과적이고 지속가능한 프로젝트들을 실시해 오고 있다. 또한 로타리 회원들은 자연재해에 가장 먼저 대응하여 이재민들에게 긴급 구호 물품을 제공할 뿐 아니라 장기적인 재건 사업까지 지원한다. 이는 로타리클럽들이 세계 각국에서 활동하고 있기 때문에 가능한 일이다.

금년 초 네팔에 강진이 발생했을 때에도 로타리안들은 가장 먼저 도움의 손길을 내밀었다. 라빈드란 회장은 "싱가포르와 인도의 로타리안 의료팀이 가장 먼저 현지에 도착했다"면서 "이어 태양열 랜턴, 쉘터박스, 방수 시트와 텐트, 식수 필터, 의약품들이 속속 도착했다"고 들려주었다. 그는 "지진으로 사랑하는 가족들과 보금자리를 잃어버린 이재민들을 돕기 위해 전 세계 로타리안들은 모금에 나서 수십만 달러의 기금을 마련했다"고 밝히고 "로타리는 수많은 카메라들이 떠나간 뒤에도 현장에 남아 재건 작업을 돕는다"고 설명했다.

지난 2004년 서남 아시아에 대형 쓰나미 사태가 발생했을 때 라빈드란 회장은 로타리의 지원 노력을 진두지휘했다. 당시 그는 1,200만 달러의 달러의 기금을 마련하여 22개 학교를 재건, 1만 5,000명의 학생들이 학업을 계속할 수 있도록 도왔다. "쓰나미가 집과 학교, 재산, 심지어 사랑하는 사람들까지 앗아갈 수 있을지 모르지만 이 아이들의 정신까지는 앗아가지 못할 것"이라고 라빈드란 회장은 말한다.

라빈드란 회장은 차(茶) 포장 산업의 선두주자인 프린트케어 PLC의 창업주이자 CEO이며, 다른 여러 기업과 비영리단체의 이사로도 활동하고 있다. 또한 스리랑카 마약방지협회 설립에도 앞장 서 지금까지 회장직을 맡고 있다.
1974년부터 로타리 생활을 시작한 그는 국제로타리 이사와 재무, 로타리재단 이사를 역임했다. 로타리재단으로부터 공로 표창과 특별 공로상을 받았으며, 소아마비 없는 세상을 위한 봉사상도 수상했다.

120万の会員に「知識とスキルと人力を世界の地域社会のために生かしていこう」

米国イリノイ州エバンストン（2015年7月1日）：全世界で地域社会の発展に取り組んでいる団体、ロータリーの会長にK.R. ラビンドラン氏が就任しました。スリランカ出身のラビンドラン氏は、2016年6月まで国際ロータリーの会長を務めます。

コロンボ・ロータリークラブの会員であるラビンドラン氏は、ロータリーが世界中でさらに社会貢献ができるよう、もっと多くの人びとにロータリーに参加してもらうことを目標としています。

ロータリーは、都市部で食糧バンクを支援したり、町から遠く離れた村できれいな飲み水を提供したりするなど大規模で持続性のあるプロジェクトを行っているほか、世界各地にあるロータリークラブを通じて、自然災害への対応にも力を入れています。

2011年の東日本大震災の後には、被災者に救援物資を送るだけでなく、その後の長期的な復興を支援するための大規模なプロジェクトも実施しています。

さらに今年、ネパールを襲った大地震でも、真っ先に支援に駆けつけた人たちの中に、多くのロータリー会員がいました。シンガポールやインドのロータリークラブは、医療チームを派遣。ロータリーはその直後、救援物資が入った『シェルターボックス』、防水シート、テントなどを現地に届けました。ロータリーはさらに、家を失った数百万人のために数千万円相当に上る募金を集めました。

ロータリーとポリオ

Ravindran pede aos associados do Rotary para doarem seu tempo, talento e conhecimento em apoio a comunidades de todo o mundo

EVANSTON, EUA (01 de julho de 2015) — K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran, um empresário de Colombo, no Sri Lanka, assume em 1º de julho o cargo de 105º presidente do Rotary International — uma rede global de 1,2 milhão de voluntários dedicados a enfrentar os desafios humanitários mais urgentes do mundo.

Ravindran, associado do Rotary Club de Colombo, afirma que uma de suas maiores prioridades será fortalecer os clubes, atraindo homens e mulheres empenhados em melhorar comunidades de todo o mundo através dos serviços voluntários.

Do apoio a bancos de alimentos locais ao fornecimento de água limpa em vilarejos remotos, os Rotary Clubs unem forças para realizar projetos impactantes e sustentáveis localmente e no exterior. E como estão presentes em todo o globo, quando grandes desastres naturais acontecem, os associados do Rotary muitas vezes são os primeiros a chegar e ajudar na reconstrução das áreas afetadas.

Após o terremoto que atingiu o Nepal no início desse ano, os associados do Rotary estavam entre os primeiros a prestar assistência. "Equipes médicas vieram de Cingapura e da Índia; lanternas solares, caixas da ShelterBox, lonas e tendas, filtros de água e medicamentos chegaram em seguida", contou Ravindran. "E centenas de milhares de dólares foram arrecadados para ajudar a reconstruir a vida dos milhões que perderam suas casas. Quando as equipes de reportagem e as câmeras vão embora e a atenção do mundo se volta para outro lugar, o Rotary continua presente."

Em 2004, após a devastação causada pelo tsunami do Oceano Índico, Ravindran liderou o trabalho rotário de assistência, ajudando a arrecadar US$ 12 milhões para reconstruir 22 escolas, permitindo que quase 15 mil crianças retomassem seus estudos. "O tsunami pode levar escolas, casas, posses e até mesmo pessoas amadas, mas ele nunca levará o espírito das crianças", afirmou Ravindran.

Como presidente, Ravindran supervisionará a meta humanitária máxima do Rotary de erradicar a poliomielite. A Iniciativa Global de Erradicação da Pólio, formada em 1988, é uma parceria público-privada liderada pelo Rotary, pela Organização Mundial da Saúde, o Centro Norte-Americano de Controle e Prevenção de Doenças, o Unicef, a Fundação Bill e Melinda Gates e governos do mundo todo. O foco do Rotary é a divulgação da causa, captação de recursos, recrutamento de voluntários e conscientização pública. Rotarianos de todo o mundo contribuíram mais de US$ 1,4 bilhão e incontáveis horas de trabalho voluntário para os esforços de erradicação da pólio.

EVANSTON, Ill., USA (01 July, 2015) — Il 1º luglio K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran, un uomo d'affari di Colombo, Sri Lanka, ha assunto l'incarico di 105º presidente del Rotary International – una rete globale di 1,2 milioni di volontari impegnati a risolvere le sfide umanitarie mondiali più pressanti.

Ravindran, socio del Rotary Club di Colombo, ha dichiarato che la sua principale priorità sarà di rafforzare i club, attraendo uomini e donne impegnati come volontari a migliorare le comunità del mondo.

I Rotary club si uniscono per realizzare progetti sostenibili di grande impatto, a livello locale e internazionale, dal supporto ai banchi alimentari nelle comunità locali ai progetti idrico-sanitari in villaggi remoti. EVANSTON (États-Unis) — K.R. « Ravi » Ravindran, un homme d'affaires de Colombo au Sri Lanka, devient le 1er juillet le 105e président du Rotary International – un réseau mondial de 1,2 million de bénévoles s'attaquant aux problèmes humanitaires les plus pressants.

M. Ravindran, membre du Rotary club de Colombo, affirme que sa priorité sera de renforcer les clubs en attirant des hommes et des femmes prêts à s'engager dans des actions qui permettent d'améliorer les conditions de vie partout dans le monde.

Qu'il s'agisse de soutenir une banque alimentaire locale ou d'approvisionner des villages isolés en eau potable, les Rotary clubs travaillent de concert pour monter des actions à l'impact durable dans leur ville comme à l'étranger. En raison de leur présence aux quatre coins du monde, les membres du Rotary sont par ailleurs souvent les premiers à intervenir lorsque des catastrophes majeures surviennent.

Ce fut le cas après le tremblement de terre qui a frappé le Népal il y a quelques mois. « Des équipes médicales sont arrivées de Singapour et d'Inde avec des lanternes solaires, des tentes, de l'équipement, des filtres à eau et des médicaments », nous apprend M. Ravindran. « Et des centaines de milliers de dollars ont été collectés pour aider les populations locales à reconstruire leurs demeures. Lorsque les équipes de télévision sont parties, lorsque le monde a tourné son regard vers la catastrophe suivante, le Rotary est resté à leurs côtés. »

Après le tsunami qui a frappé la zone de l'océan indien en 2004, M. Ravindran avait déjà dirigé les opérations de secours du Rotary et aidé à recueillir 12 millions de dollars pour reconstruire 22 écoles accueillant 15 000 élèves. « Le tsunami a peut-être pris des vies, emporté des écoles ou des maisons, mais nous ne pouvions pas le laisser se saisir de l'esprit de nos enfants », affirme-t-il.

Ravindran insta a 1,2 millones de socios de Rotary a enriquecer el mundo con sus conocimientos, talentos y tiempo

EVANSTON, Illinois, Estados Unidos (1 de julio, 2015) — "Ravi" K.R. Ravindran, líder empresarial de gran trayectoria de Colombo (Sri Lanka), será a partir del 1 de julio el 105o presidente de Rotary International, red mundial que agrupa a 1,2 millones de voluntarios que abordan los problemas humanitarios más apremiantes del mundo.

Para Ravindran, socio del Club Rotario de Colombo, una de sus prioridades será el fortalecimiento de los clubes mediante la captación de personas de ambos sexos interesadas en mejorar las condiciones de vida en comunidades de todo el mundo mediante el servicio voluntario.

Ya se trate de provisionar bancos de alimentos locales o de abastecer de agua salubre a aldeas remotas, los clubes rotarios unen fuerzas para llevar a cabo proyectos sostenibles de alto impacto en sus propios países y en el extranjero. Generalmente, los socios de Rotary son los primeros en responder ante un desastre natural y asistir en los esfuerzos de reconstrucción, ya que están presentes en todos los rincones del mundo.

Tras el devastador terremoto que afectó a Nepal a principios de este año, los socios de Rotary se hicieron presentes de inmediato. Los fondos se utilizaron para reconstruir 22 escuelas, haciendo posible que alrededor de 15.000 alumnos reanudaran sus estudios. "El tsunami arrasó con colegios, hogares, posesiones terrenales y hasta nuestros seres amados, pero nunca le permitimos robarle el espíritu a los niños", acotó Ravindran.

En calidad de presidente, Ravindran supervisará la iniciativa de la erradicación de la poliomielitis, principal prioridad humanitaria de Rotary cuyo objetivo es eliminar esta infecciosa y paralizante enfermedad. Ravindran ruft die 1,2 Millionen Mitglieder von Rotary auf,
ihre Fähigkeiten zum humanitären Engagement in aller Welt einzusetzen

EVANSTON, Illinois, 1. Juli 2015 — K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran, Unternehmer aus Sri Lanka, übernimmt am 1. Juli das Amt als 105. Präsident von Rotary International, der Dachorganisation aller Rotary Clubs weltweit. Rotary ist ein globales Netzwerk von über 1,2 Millionen Mitgliedern, die sich humanitär engagieren und den aktuellen Problemen der Welt zuwenden. Das Amt des Weltpräsidenten wechselt jährlich.

Rotarier waren unter den Ersthelfern nach dem Erdbeben in Nepal. "Medizinische Teams trafen aus Singapur und Indien ein, um Solarlaternen, ShelterBoxen, Zelte, Wasserfilter und Medikamente zu liefern", sagte Ravindran. "Und es wurden Gelder gesammelt, um denjenigen zu helfen, die durch die Katastrophe obdachlos geworden sind. Vor allem aber werden Rotarier auch dann noch vor Ort sein und helfen und wieder aufbauen, wenn die Kamerateams der Nachrichtenagenturen die Katastrophenorte bereits verlassen haben."

Als ein Tsunami im Indischen Ozean 2004 große Verwüstungen in den Ländern der Region verursachte, führte Ravindran gemeinsam mit rotarischen Freunden aus aller Welt Hilfsanstrengungen an , um mit Spenden von 12 Millionen USD 22 Schulen für fast 15.000 Kinder wieder aufzubauen. „ Der Tsunami konnte Schulen, Häuser und Eigentum zerstören, sogar Menschenleben fordern. Doch er konnte nicht den Kindern ihren Elan nehmen", sagte Ravindran.

Als Präsident von Rotary wird K.R. Ravindran auch das Hauptziel von Rotary auf internationaler Ebene, die globale Ausrottung der Kinderlähmung, weiter verfolgen. Rotary ist ein maßgeblicher Partner in der 1988 gegründeten Global Polio Eradication Initiative, zu der neben Rotary die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO, die US-Gesundheitsbehörden (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, die Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation sowie Regierungen von Geberländern aus aller Welt gehören. Zur Unterstützung und Fortführung der weltweiten Kampagne gegen das Virus haben die Mitglieder von Rotary bis heute neben zahllosen Einsatzstunden über 1,4 Milliarden USD bereitgestellt. Außerdem ist Rotary weiterhin ein unermüdlicher Vorsprecher bei Regierungen, um für eine nachhaltige Unterstützung der Impfmaßnahmen zu werben.

Seit Beginn der Kampagne gegen die Kinderlähmung konnte die Zahl der weltweit vorkommenden Fälle um 99,9 Prozent gesenkt werden. Heute sind nur noch drei Länder endemisch von der Krankheit betroffen: Afghanistan, Nigeria und Pakistan. 2014 wurden weltweit nur noch 370 Erkrankungsfälle gemeldet, während es zu Beginn der Initiative in den 80er Jahren noch über 1000 Infektionen pro Tag waren.

Als Rotarier seit 1974 und Vorsitzender des Rotary Polio Komitees in Sri Lanka führte K.R. Ravindran maßgeblich die Anstrengungen gegen die Kinderlähmung in seinem Land an. Sri Lanka konnte als erstes asiatisches Land als poliofrei zertifiziert werden, nachdem es Vertretern von Rotary, UNICEF und der Regierung sogar gelungen war, während des dort herrschenden Bürgerkrieges Waffenruhen auszuhandeln, um Impfaktionen in den Konfliktgebieten ermöglichen zu können.

Ravindran ist Gründer und CEO des Teeverpackungsunternehmens Printcare PLC. Er dient auch im Vorstand verschiedener anderer Unternehmen und gemeinnütziger Organisationen. Daneben ist er Gründungspräsident der größten Vereinigung Sri Lankas zur Bekämpfung der Drogensucht, der Sri Lanka Anti-Narcotics Association.

Islamabad (27 June, 2015) — Rotary's international leaders in the global fight to eradicate polio are in Pakistan this week to recognize the country's continued commitment and progress toward ending the paralyzing but vaccine-preventable disease. Rotary Foundation Trustee Vice-Chair Mike McGovern who also serves as chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee and PolioPlus Director Dr. Carol Pandak are meeting Rotary members and high-level government officials during their visit.

Pakistan – one of only three countries where polio has never been stopped – accounted for nearly 90% of the world's polio cases last year. As a result of continued measures to reach all children with the polio vaccine, and with the support of Rotary's National PolioPlus Committee in Pakistan – spearheaded by chair Aziz Memon – polio cases are down nearly 70% this year compared to the same period in 2014.

"We are honored to visit this beautiful country and rally support in ending polio," said McGovern. "While Pakistan continues to face obstacles in its journey to polio eradication, we are excited about the current progress being made. Leadership at all levels of government and society is critical to achieving a polio-free Pakistan."

Rotary launched its polio immunization program PolioPlus in 1985, and in 1988 became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since the initiative launched in 1988, polio cases have decreased by 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 400 confirmed in 2014.

Rotary's roles within the initiative are fundraising, advocacy, and social mobilization. To date, Rotary has contributed more than PKR142 billion (US$1.4 billion) to ending polio, including more than PKR10.7 billion (US$107 million) in grants to support polio eradication activities in Pakistan and countless volunteer hours by members of Pakistan's 173 Rotary clubs.

Along with on-the-ground support, the government of Pakistan has invested PKR$5.9 billion (US$57.9 million) in its own polio eradication activities since 2003.

Ravindran urges Rotary's 1.2 million members to give the gifts of time, talent, and knowledge to improve lives in communities across the globe

EVANSTON, Ill., USA (25 June, 2015) — K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran, a business leader from Colombo, Sri Lanka, takes office on 1 July as the 105th president of Rotary International – a global network of 1.2 million volunteers dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges.

Ravindran, a member of the Rotary Club of Colombo, says a top priority will be to strengthen clubs by attracting men and women committed to improving communities worldwide through volunteer service.

From supporting local food pantries to providing clean water in remote villages, Rotary clubs join forces to carry out impactful and sustainable projects at home and abroad. And Rotary members often are both first-responders and re-builders when major disasters strike, because Rotary clubs are present in every corner of the world.

Following the earthquake that hit Nepal earlier this year, Rotary members were among the first to respond. "Medical teams arrived from Singapore and India. Solar lanterns, ShelterBoxes, tarpaulins and tents, water filters and medicines followed," said Ravindran. "And hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to help rebuild the lives of the millions who have lost their homes. When the camera crews leave, when the eye of the world looks elsewhere, Rotary will continue to remain."

After the devastation of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Ravindran led Rotary's recovery efforts by helping to raise US$12 million to rebuild 22 schools, enabling nearly 15,000 children to resume their studies. "The tsunami could take away schools, homes, possessions, and even loved-ones, but it would never be allowed to take away the spirit of children," said Ravindran.

As president, Ravindran will oversee Rotary's top humanitarian goal of eradicating the paralyzing infectious disease polio. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership led by Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary's focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building. Rotary club members worldwide have contributed more than US $1.4 billion and countless volunteer hours to the polio eradication effort.

Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.

As Sri Lanka's chair of Rotary's polio eradication efforts, Ravindran led efforts to eradicate polio from Sri Lanka. His country became one of the first in Asia to become polio-free in Asia. The PolioPlus task force which he headed consisted of representatives from Rotary, UNICEF and the Sri Lankan government. The partnership successfully negotiated a ceasefire with the northern militants to allow polio immunizations to continue during scheduled National Immunization Days.

Ravindran is founder and CEO of Printcare PLC, a publicly listed company and global leader in the tea packaging industry. He also serves on the board of several other companies and charitable trusts. He is the founding president of the Sri Lanka Anti-Narcotics Association, the largest antinarcotics organization in Sri Lanka.
A Rotarian since 1974, Ravindran has served Rotary as a director and treasurer of Rotary International and as a trustee of The Rotary Foundation.
